The disastrous economic situation and the political and social crisis inherited from the reign of his father Felipe IV increased the critical situation of Spain and especially of Castile, giving rise to a series of monetary devaluations that reached the peak with the deflation of the fleece currency in 1680 and the subsequent fall of economic activity. In nothing contributed to improve this situation the valid ones in charge of the government, only the Count of Oropesa made a firm policy of reduction of taxes and containment of the public expense.
