During its reign two wars against France took place. In 1684 in Regensburg a truce of twenty years with France was signed, truce that was broken in 1690 when concluding an alliance between Spain, England, the Netherlands and the Empire giving rise to a third warlike confrontation that would last until 1697. The French armies occupied a series of Catalan squares and even seized Barcelona in 1697 In this third war against the neighboring country, Spain intervened in the ranks of the League of Austria, together with the Empire, Austria, Sweden and the Papacy. The war ended with the peace of Rvswick. The first serious defeat of the foreign policy of Louis XIV, who was forced to cede to Spain squares in Catalonia. Flanders and Luxembourg, thus showing their interest in obtaining for the Bourbons the succession to the Spanish throne.
